Weekend in Queens: Jazz in the Park and Shakespeare Under the Trees

If planning a weekend activity with family excites you but you just don’t have a lot of time to browse the internet, I’ve got you! This week’s ‘Weekend in Queens’ is all about keeping things easy and fun. I found two great events that bring music, drama, and space for kids to play and/or relax. No tickets to buy, no stress, and definitely no boredom.

1. Summer Sundays in the Park: The Highliners in Concert

When: Sunday, August 10 at 6 PM
Where: Travers Park, 78th Street between 34th Avenue and Northern Boulevard, Jackson Heights
Tickets: Free and open to all ages

Why It’s Great:

  • Live jazz with a mix of funk and other styles

  • Big park space where kids can play and families can relax

  • Friendly community vibe

Pro Tips:

  • Come early to get a good spot and some shade

  • Bring snacks and bug spray

  •  Bring a chair or blanket since seating is first come, first served

2. Hip to Hip Theatre Presents: Hamlet + Kids Workshop

When: Sunday, August 10
4:30 PM – Kids Workshop with games and fun activities
5:00 PM – Hamlet Performance

Where: Socrates Sculpture Park (event happens rain or shine)
RSVP (Reserve your spot): You can RSVP for free here

Why It’s Great:

  • Kids can join a fun workshop before the show

  • Family-friendly version of a classic play

  • Free to attend and open to everyone

Pro Tips:

  • Arrive early for the workshop and to get a good seat

Why These Events Are Worth It

  • Music + Theater: You get culture, fun, and variety without the price tag.
