Queens Public Library (QPL) will commemorate Banned Books Week from September 22-28, 2024, hosting a range of events to highlight the importance of intellectual freedom amid rising censorship. This year’s programming includes a Banned Books Library Card design contest, workshops, a Banned Books Movie Festival, and virtual conversations with authors. The Ridgewood Library will also offer a Banned Books giveaway, with select titles available for free. On October 19, QPL will participate in the National “Freedom to Read” Day of Action, advocating for free access to diverse books and viewpoints.
QPL’s initiatives this year aim to engage community members of all ages, reminding them of the importance of protecting the right to read and access varied perspectives. In addition to these activities, the library’s digital collection will feature popular banned books available for download until October 31.
The overarching message from QPL is clear: in the face of growing challenges to intellectual freedom, they stand committed to ensuring that everyone has the right to explore ideas, stories, and information freely. Whether through art, film, or literature, this year’s Banned Books Week promises to be a powerful reflection on the significance of unrestricted access to knowledge.
Be sure to check QPL’s website and social media channels for more details on how you can participate in these events.
