This October, over the course of three days, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to explore some of the city’s most remarkable and rarely accessible locations. As part of the annual Open House New York (OHNY) Weekend, more than 270 unique sites across all five boroughs will open their doors to the public, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the city’s diverse and historic architecture.
Organized by the nonprofit organization, Open House New York, this festival grants visitors special access to places typically closed to the public, from landmarked buildings to major infrastructure sites. “Opening doors to share the experience of the city is a beautifully simple yet profoundly democratic act—one that encourages learning, connection, and joy,” says Kristin LaBuz, the executive director of OHNY. This festival celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of New York by inviting locals and tourists alike to explore and discover the city’s hidden treasures.
This year marks the 22nd annual OHNY Weekend, which runs from October 18 to 20, 2024. Among the more than 270 featured locations, 27 are found in Queens, showcasing the borough’s rich history and culture. Some of these locations, like the Lewis Latimer House Museum in Flushing, are regularly open to the public but will offer special insider tours for the event.
Over half of the sites offer “open access,” meaning visitors can explore without prior registration or tickets. However, some sites—such as the Ravenswood Generating Station in Long Island City—require tickets due to space or security restrictions. The Ravenswood tour has already sold out, promising a deep dive into how the station is being transformed into a renewable energy hub.
