Queens, NY — On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Far Rockaway celebrated the grand opening of its newest community asset, the Far Rockaway Library. Situated at 1637 Central Avenue, this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone for the Queens Public Library system and the local community.
A Modern Space for All Ages
The new Far Rockaway Library, which spans 18,000 square feet, represents a $33 million investment in the community. This cutting-edge facility features dedicated spaces for different age groups and interests, ensuring that everyone—from children to adults—can find a place to engage and learn.
- First Floor: The ground floor boasts a vibrant teen room and a well-equipped computer area designed to cater to the younger generation’s needs and interests.
- Second Floor: Here, you’ll find separate reading areas for adults and children alongside several versatile meeting rooms.
The library offers 32 public computers, 32 public laptops, and a collection of nearly 30,000 books, periodicals, and other materials. Whether you’re looking to dive into a good book, complete research for a project, or simply enjoy a quiet space, this new library has you covered.
Convenient Hours for the Community
The Far Rockaway Library is committed to being accessible to all residents, with hours that accommodate various schedules:
- Mondays: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Tuesdays: 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
- Wednesdays: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Thursdays: 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.
- Fridays: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Sundays: 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
A Welcoming Space for All
The library’s opening was met with enthusiastic support from the community. Nearly 2,000 people visited the new facility on its first day, and 800 books and other materials were checked out. The excitement continued the following day, with over 700 visitors and close to 700 items circulating.
Residents have already begun to appreciate the library’s role as a central hub in the community.

Dennis Walcott, president and CEO of Queens Public Library, emphasized the importance of this new facility: “To have that living room open to the public, especially on a Sunday, to me sends a very positive signal that we care about you, and we’re opening our doors.”
